The package said planting season was from April to June, so in true procrastinator style, Tracy decided to plant the squash on June 30th. It took a couple weeks to germinate, and not too much later, we had some beautiful blossoms. We were really excited, and hopeful to get some fresh zucchini and yellow squash soon.
In her haste, to get the planting done before it got too hot outside, Tracy simply dug several little holes, and dropped in a few seeds to each one. She gave them plenty of water, and even dropped in some plant food to give them a good start. As you can see from the pics, she did NOT clear the wood chips away. She also did not till the soil so the poor things may not have much of a chance.
It is now well into August, and it doesn't look too promising. We are trying to give them all the water they need, but the soil may just be too hard, or the weather too hot, for them to survive. There are still several plants with blossoms on them but now they look wilted, and yellow, and there is not a fruit among them. Well, we can chalk that one up for experience. Maybe we'll be more successful next year. We were, however, able to enjoy fresh veggies from the family garden up in Fillmore. We picked some on a visit up there in May, Faith brought us some when she came down in June, and on our most recent visit, Peter grabbed some tomatoes.
